Known for its dominance in high-performance road bikes, Ducati is now expanding its motorsport vision beyond asphalt, and the Desmo450 MX marks the beginning of this bold new chapter for the Italian manufacturer.
Ducati Enters the Motocross Arena
For decades, Ducati has been associated with superbikes and MotoGP racing, but the Desmo450 MX shows the company’s ambition to compete in motocross as well. The bike has been developed using Ducati’s racing experience and is designed to deliver professional-level off-road performance. It is also the first model in a future lineup of specialized off-road motorcycles from the brand.
Production of the bike has already started at Ducati’s famous Borgo Panigale factory in Italy, highlighting the importance of this project for the company. Ducati engineers worked closely with professional riders and motocross legends during development to ensure the bike performs competitively on real race tracks.
Powerful Desmodromic Engine
One of the biggest highlights of the Desmo450 MX is its unique engine technology. The motorcycle is powered by a 449.6cc single-cylinder engine that uses Ducati’s iconic Desmodromic valve system, a technology rarely seen in motocross bikes. This system allows precise valve control and supports high-rpm performance.
The engine produces around 63.5 horsepower at 9,400 rpm and 53.5 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, making it one of the most powerful machines in the motocross segment. The bike is paired with a 5-speed gearbox and quickshifter, helping riders shift gears smoothly during aggressive off-road riding.
Another interesting aspect is the engine’s ability to rev very high for a single-cylinder motocross bike, with a limiter close to 11,900 rpm. This allows riders to maintain speed with fewer gear changes, which can be an advantage during competitive racing.
Lightweight and Race-Focused Chassis
To match its powerful engine, Ducati has designed a lightweight aluminum frame that improves agility and durability. The frame uses a combination of cast, forged, and extruded components, keeping the structure strong while minimizing weight.
The bike also comes equipped with high-quality suspension and racing components. A fully adjustable 49 mm Showa front fork and a rear shock with progressive linkage ensure excellent stability on rough tracks and jumps.
Braking duties are handled by Brembo calipers with a 260 mm front disc and a 240 mm rear disc, providing strong stopping power even in muddy or sandy racing conditions.
Built for Professional Motocross
Ducati has designed the Desmo450 MX primarily for competition. It runs on a 21-inch front wheel and a 19-inch rear wheel wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tyres, which are commonly used in motocross racing.
The bike also features advanced electronics and race-ready equipment to help riders achieve better performance on the track. According to Ducati, the motorcycle combines lightweight construction, high power, and modern electronics to deliver speed, control, and rider confidence in extreme off-road environments.
Expected Launch and Price
The Desmo450 MX is expected to arrive in several global markets, including India, with an estimated price of around Rs 13 lakh. This positions it as a premium motocross machine aimed at enthusiasts and professional racers rather than casual riders.
